Director's Message

prof_sian_griffiths_200x300.jpgPublic health remains high on public, political and professional agendas. Preparing for a flu pandemic, learning from SARS, halting the epidemic of obesity and improving the poor quality of our air are just a few of the issues facing society today not just in Hong Kong but across the world. Opportunities for education and learning about protecting the populations health and preventing disease are increasingly important as is the challenge of providing equitable and affordable healthcare based on evidence.

School of Public Health and Primary Care (SPHPC) is the first and the only comprehensive building dedicated to public health in Hong Kong. The focus of our work is postgraduate education, training and research. We are pleased to offer courses and degrees across all areas of public health practice. Based on the definition of public health as the science and art of promoting health and preventing disease through the organized efforts of individuals and society we have reshaped our Master of Public Health (MPH). We will offer all students grounding in professionally recognized competencies and in areas increasingly recognized as core to public health. We are also able to offer courses in areas of special interest - including epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion, health management. We also work with colleagues in other Faculties of the University, and are pleased to offer the MBA in Healthcare Studies and a new certificate in public health law with the Law School. Our aim is to provide opportunities for all those interested in learning more about public health.

International health research expertise and interests of our school members range from comparative health policy, designing sustainable health care systems, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, reproductive health, children’s health, prevention and control of infectious on population support during natural disaster, war or civil conflict and is the first programme of this nature in China.
