Biography 
Professor Chan qualified both as a biomedical engineer and a physician and had undergone academic training in Johns Hopkins University, Harvard School of Public Health, Hong Kong University and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Professor Chan started her international public health career in mid-1990s as a frontline emergency relief practitioner and she served as the president (2001-2005) of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)-Hong Kong, the Nobel peace prize winning medical humanitarian organization that provides emergency medical relief to victims of wars, epidemics and natural disasters. She had completed a 3 year research fellowship (2003-2006) at the Program on Human Security at Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard School of Public Health.

She joined the Faculty of School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006 and has been teaching and conducting research in evidence-based medical humanitarian assistance & disasters, climate change, injury and violence epidemiology. In 2007, she established the CUHK SPHPC Humanitarian Initiative to support, collaborate and provide technical assistance to community based initiatives to improve health of populations in developing and resource deficit settings. Currently, she is the director of the newly established Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) which aims to conduct research, teaching and engage in knowledge transfer projects in public health and medical disaster response in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region. She is also convener of the CUHK SPHPC Climate Change and Health Study Group and the principal investigator of the Five-year Ethnic Minority Project (2009-2014) that aims to examine risk factors and disaster preparedness in non-Han ethnic minorities in extreme poverty based communities in remote rural China. She teaches undergraduates as well as the Masters in Public Health. Prof Chan is currently a Fellow at the Morningside College, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Chan serves in various governing boards of international non-government organizations and government advisory groups. She received the 2004 Hong Kong Ten Most Outstanding Person Award, 2005 World Ten Outstanding Person Award, 2005 World Medical Association Caring Physician of the World, 2007 Hong Kong Humanity Award, 2007 Nobuo Maeda International Research Award and 2010, 2011 Best Teacher Award at SPHPC, Faculty of Medicine Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has published more than 120 peer-reviewed academic articles in international journals.
